5AVOIDING FOODBORNE ILLNESSES: TIPS FOR FOOD SAFETY EDUCATION. The U.S. government estimates that there are about 48 million cases of foodborne illnesses annually, affecting roughly one in six Americans. Each year, these illnesses result in approximately 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths. Food Safety Education Month is observed in September to bring awareness to foodborne illness prevention.
