Where We Started Matters

July 9, 2026 by Today's Hotelier Leave a Comment

By Rahul Patel, AAHOA Chairman (2026-2027)

The American Dream has never been about guarantees. It has always been about possibility.

For so many AAHOA Members, that possibility began with sacrifice. Families arrived in the United States carrying little more than hope, determination, and a willingness to work harder than anyone else. They took chances on roadside motels and overlooked properties. They worked the front desk by day and folded laundry at night. Children did homework behind the check-in counter while parents built something bigger than themselves.

Thirty-seven years ago, AAHOA was founded because Indian American hoteliers faced discrimination and exclusion. Instead of backing down, they came together. They built a community rooted in resilience, fairness, and opportunity. Those roots became the foundation for everything AAHOA is today.

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, it’s worth reflecting on what makes this country – and this association – so special. Generations of immigrants came here believing that through hard work and perseverance, a better future was possible.

Our members are living proof of that promise. Some of our members started with a single property and built portfolios substantial enough to pass down to the next generation, creating opportunities for their children that once may have seemed unimaginable.

In many ways, it is the ultimate example of compounding interest: Hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance growing into lasting generational success.

Remembering Who We Are

This year, my theme is “Strong Roots, Stronger AAHOA,” because I believe our future depends on remembering where we came from.

Growth matters. Innovation matters. Advocacy matters. But none of it means anything if we lose sight of the values that brought us here: Family, service, integrity, and community.

The hospitality industry will continue to evolve. Challenges will come, just as they always have. But our roots give us strength. They remind us to stay grounded, support one another, and keep building opportunities for the next generation.

Many of us grew up watching our parents and grandparents make sacrifices so their children could dream bigger. Now, it is our responsibility to protect and strengthen the industry that helped so many families achieve success.

AAHOA’s story is an American story. A story of resilience, entrepreneurship, and unity. And as we look ahead, I hope we never forget the roots that made our community strong in the first place.
